I {Heart} This Very Special Project

It's February 28th... which is a special day. Yes, it IS the last day of February, but that isn't what makes it special. It is special because the 28th of every month is the day the Challenge Your Stash Project is due.

I love the CYS group... we have to create with what we have. We can't buy anything. Of course, I do that often, but with CYS, there is a theme, too. One of the members chooses the theme each month. This month it's Tracie's turn.

Tracie's theme is.... "there has to be a heart someplace on your card."

Now... time for confession. EEK! I remembered there had to be a heart somewhere... but I didn't remember it specifically said a CARD. A card? Sheesh! Of course it said card, after all the CYS gals are cardmakers.  BUT... that part completely slipped my mind and I didn't make a card. Instead, I made four name tags. They are large - 6" x 6" - so they could be cards. Well, except for the fact that they have names on them.

Okay, let me explain these name tags. A friend (who is the volunteer preschool worker in our church) asked me to make four name tags for baskets where they put items of the babies/toddlers who come to their nursery. She didn't give me a lot of directions... just gave me the measurements of the baskets and the names of the children. Well, being a cardmaker, I teated them like cards and designed them with stamped images. I generated the names on the computer. I have letter stamps but I thought the computer was an easier option, plus they would be neat/uniform.

For embellishments I used Brads and Washi Tape. After all, this is for a preschool so I didn't want anything that could potentially fall off of the name tags and land on the floor where some little darling might pick it up and put it in his/her mouth.

I think these will serve my friend's purpose. AND... they have lots and lots of hearts on them so they also fit the purpose of "there has to be a heart someplace".... well, all except they aren't cards.

Please forgive me Tracie! I didn't mean to change you theme. It just sort of happened.

Personal Challenge 2018 - Week 9

Tuesday are Travel Tuesdays. This is my 50-week challenge for 2018. I'm calling it my States of the Union Challenge because it's all about the 50 states of the USA. I do some research about the state and then choose something I learn as inspiration for making a card. I'm doing the states in the order they attained statehood.

This week's state is...

New Hampshire
Date of Statehood: June 21, 1788

I learned quite a bit about New Hampshire during my research for this week's States of the Union post.

The first potato planted in the United States was at Londonderry Common Field in 1719.

The Flume Gorge is one of the biggest tourist attractions in New Hampshire. Many visitors come to marvel at the geological wonder. The discovery of the place is an interesting story: the gorge was discovered in 1808 by Aunt Jess Guernsey while out on a fishing trip. She had lived in the region for years, yet discovered it at 93 years old.

Levi Hutchins of Concord invented the first alarm clock in 1787.

New Hampshire’s state fruit is the pumpkin. It was chosen by Wells Memorial Elementary School in Harrisville and adopted by the General Court in 2006.

New Hampshire is one of few states with no sales tax.

Four months before his more famous ride to Lexington and Concord, Paul Revere made an even longer ride from Boston to Portsmouth, to warn of an attack on Fort William and Mary. Colonists prevented the attack from happening, and saved the fort from the British.

New Hampshire's state sport is skiing.

The Blue Ghost of Wolfeboro is the U.S. Mail Boat for Lake Winnipesaukee. It makes a daily 60-mile loop delivering mail to 30 stops at camps and islands around the lake.

New Castle is the smallest town in New Hampshire. It covers .8 square miles, or 512 acres. The town is composed of one large island and several smaller islands, and serves as a scenic residential and recreational community.

For hundreds of years, the Old Man of the Mountain was New Hampshire’s pride and joy. Since its first recorded mention in 1805, the natural rock formation—five granite cliff ledges on Cannon Mountain in Franconia, New Hampshire, that appear to form a man’s haggard profile—attracted New Hampshirites and tourists alike to the White Mountains. It appears on the state seal, license plates, quarter, and postage stamps. Unfortunately, in 2003, the Old Man of the Mountain collapsed. New Hampshire residents were so heartbroken they left flowers at the mountain’s base in tribute.

New Hampshire teacher Christa McAuliffe was supposed to be the first private civilian to travel to space. She was selected from over 11,000 candidates to participate in the NASA Teacher in Space Project on July 19, 1985. She, along with the rest of the space shuttle’s entire seven-person crew, tragically died when the Orbiter Challenger exploded 73 seconds after its launch on January 28, 1986. The planetarium in Concord, New Hampshire, is named for her.

New Hampshire’s Mount Washington is one the windiest places on earth. The record for second-highest surface wind speed ever witnessed by man was reported at the summit of Mount Washington on April 12, 1934. The wind squall was observed at 231 miles per hour. The winds were faster than most hurricanes

The three miles long Cog Railway at Mount Washington is the world’s first mountain-climbing cog railway and also the second steepest rack railway in the world which escalates Mt. Washington’s western slope beginning at 2,700 feet and ending at 6,288 feet above sea level.

New Hampshire has more than 50 covered bridges, including one in Cornish with the taunting name Blow-Me-Down.

In 2011, a Rochester, New Hampshire woman had an urn full of her mother’s ashes stolen at a bingo game. She eventually went to the media with the story hoping to convince the perpetrator to return the urn. A few days later, it showed up on her doorstep.

Richard & Maurice McDonald — the actual founders of McDonald’s — were Manchester’s West high school graduates. The McDonald’s brothers sold their first hamburger stand to Ray Croc, often said to be the founder.

There are some weird laws in New Hampshire. It’s against the law for unlicensed showmen, tumblers and rope dancers to perform in public. You cannot sell the clothes you are wearing to pay off a gambling debt. You may not tap your feet, nod your head, or in any way keep time to the music in a tavern, restaurant, or cafe. Any cattle that crosses state roads must be fitted with a device to gather its feces.  Sundays citizens may not relieve themselves while looking up.

New Hampshire is the only state where seatbelts are not mandatory.

In a shockingly contentious battle over ownership, Newport, New Hampshire, claims to be the location where the infamous nursery rhyme “Mary Had a Little Lamb” was written. The poem’s author, Sarah Josepha Hale, was from Newport and is one of two people credited with the original writing of the piece in an ongoing struggle for bragging rights with Sterling, Massachusetts.

I've decided to go with this bit of New Hampshire information for my card's inspiration...  Mount Monadnock is the most hiked mountain in the United States, and is second in the world to Mount Fuji in Japan.

This Is Love

The Bible Journaling (BAJ) group on SCS has a theme each month. This month's theme is Love - Pure Love. For me, there is no greater example of love than the love Christ has for me, a love so great that He died on the cross for my sins. The crucifixion story is found in all four gospels, but I chose to journal in the 27th chapter of Matthew, mainly because those pages were clear in my Bible.

I tried something I hadn't tried before with this entry. I used vellum for my work, since the stamp I wanted to use was rather large and I didn't want to cover up the words in my Bible. I've used vellum before - quite often, if fact - but this time I heat embossed on it. Truthfully I was a bit apprehensive that the heat would warp the vellum, but it didn't. I really like how it turned out.

I used clear embossing powder and heat set it. Then I sponged Distress ink onto the vellum to make the design show up.

I used Washi Tape to add it to the gutter of my page. The Scripture underneath it is unharmed.

By the Glow of the Candle

My friend Pansy is hosting the Christmas CraZy group on SCS this year. I'm so glad she has allowed me to participate!

The way it works is every other month we are partnered with another Christmas CraZy person and we send each other a Christmas image and a bit of coordinating DP. Easy! Then we have a month to create a card using those items. Again, easy!

My partner for this first round in 2018 was Pansy! She sent me a great assortment of papers and the image and sentiment on my card, too.

 THANK YOU, Pansy!

It doesn't show in the photo, but the yellow glow around the candle sparkles. I added clear Sparkle Spectrum Noir tot he yellow part.

Safari Time

The Creative Card Chicks is a great group of women... so talented! There is a different host each month. The host sends out little kits to all the other members and we all get crafty. WOW! I am just amazed when I see what the others do with the same items I used. (I feel so inadequate sometimes, but I give it my best and have fun, too, so I try not to stress out too much.)

This month Kelly is the hostess. She chose the theme On Safari and sent a fabulous kit. I'm loving the adorable MFT image!!!

Thinking of Meow (You)

I have some MEOWS for you! If you are a cat lover, Eyelet Outlet is the place you need to go. They have a lot of different cat items - brads and a variety of Washi Tape designs. The best part - the price is very economical. So hurry... head on over to Eyelet Outlet and check it out. HERE is the link to make it really easy to see what "Cat" items there are.

I decided to make a cat card again this week with my Eyelet Outlet goodies. (My first card as an Eyelet Outlet design team member was also a cat-themed card).

The kitten brads come in a package of black and white. I wanted a tan-colored cat in my conversation bubble, so I colored one of the white ones with a Copic Marker.

A Fork In the Road

Have you ever encountered a fork in the road? You thought you were heading one way, but something came up and you just weren't sure where it was taking you.

I've had those kinds of experiences, which is one of the reasons why I love this Yogi Berra quote.

If you come to a fork in the road take it.

That's just one of four great stamps in the Wise Men stamp set from The Project Bin.

I love the size of the stamp (it makes a bold statement):

I used some subtle bicycle designer paper in the background to coordinate with the bicycle charm. And I thought just a pop of orange was a nice addiction.

Here is the inside:

Give me a J, E, A, N, and T

The third Wednesday of every month is the day that Kelly, Barb and I agreed would be the day for Ready, Set, Go! What is Ready, Set, Go? Each month one of us chooses a theme for the three of us to use in making a card/project. The idea is that these the theme needs to be one that is a bit extreme, that stretches beyond our comfort zones.

This month Kelly chose our theme...

Create a card (or project) using at least three of the letters in your first name! Your letters may include the image itself, for example: K, L, and Y for Kelly could be K (Kangaroo), L (Lace), and Y (Yellow).

Hmmmm... my name is Jeanette, so the letters I had to choose from were J, E, A, N, and T. I decided to use all five of them.

J = Java
E = Enamel Dots
A = AMuse Studio Ribbon
N = Night of Navy
T = Tempting Turquoise

That was such fun!
Thanks for a GREAT theme, Kelly!

Be sure to head over to Kelly's blog and Barb's blog to see what they made with the letters of their names.

Personal Challenge 2018 - Week 8

This is the 8th week of my 50-week personal challenge of 2018. Each week I research one of the United States (in the order they attained statehood) and share some of the things I discover about that state. Then I choose one fact as inspiration for a card.

This week's state is...
South Carolina
Date of Statehood: May 23, 1788

I learned a lot of interesting things about South Carolina this week.

South Carolina is the only state in the U.S. that grows tea.

Weird laws in South Carolina include 1) If a man proposes marriage to a woman, by law, the marriage must take place, 2) It is illegal to keep a horse in the bathtub, and 3) When approaching an intersection in an automated vehicle, the driver must stop 100 feet from the intersection and fire a gun or rifle to warn horse traffic.

The Shag, not the Charleston, was designated the official state dance in 1984.

Bishopville, South Carolina, is home to The Button Museum, the brainchild of one Dalton Stevens. A lifelong insomniac, one night in 1983, Stevens decided to while the hours away by sewing buttons on to one of his suits. Two years later, he had successfully attached more than 16,000 buttons to the garment. Stevens kept his project going, adding buttons to all kinds of bizarre objects. Today, the fruits of his labor—including a button-covered hearse—can be viewed in a hangar he rents.

South Carolina houses the only colony of free-ranging rhesus monkeys in the United States. There are about 3,500 monkeys on Morgan Island, which is also known as Monkey Island.

In 2014, an eight-year-old girl wrote a letter to her state senator suggesting that the wooly mammoth become the official state fossil. Despite the fact that some creationists took issue, the measure was passed in May of that year.

The largest tires in the world, earthmover tires that measure 14 feet across, are made in Lexington, South Carolina.

On average, about 10 tornadoes touch down in South Carolina each year, usually in the spring.

South Carolina is home to the world’s hottest chili pepper, Smokin’ Ed’s “Carolina Reaper,” grown by Ed Currie of the PuckerButt Pepper Company. Currie’s peppers are so hot that often people who eat them will spasm and vomit.

The world’s smallest police station is in Ridgeway. It’s about as big as a toll booth and was in full use from 1940-1990.

About 2/3 of South Carolina is forested, and almost 3/4 of the forests in the state are privately owned. Approximately 48 percent of South Carolina's forests is pine, 52 percent is hardwood.

There is a town in South Carolina named Due West, and you can probably guess where it is geographically.

If you go to Marion and drink water from Catfish Creek, you’ll become infatuated with the area and want to stay forever…. according to the folklore, at least.

God’s Acre Healing Spring in Blackwell, SC is rumored to have healing waters that can cure the sick and wounded. The previous owner of the land officially deeded the land to God.

The first club for golfers in the United States was created by Scottish settlers in Charleston, South Carolina, on September 29, 1786.

South Carolina does not have any professional sports teams. There is no NFL, NBA, NHL, MLB, or MLS. However, Spartanburg, South Carolina is home to Duncan Park Baseball Stadium, the oldest minor league stadium in the country.

I've decided to go with this bit of South Carolina information for my card's inspiration...  Snow in South Carolina is very rare: On average, the state receives less than an inch each year. When there is snowfall, chaos reigns.

I recently received some images from Janet and decided the "pirate/snowman" was the perfect image for this week's card since much of South Carolina is coastal.

Thank you, Janet... I had fun with the images you sent.

I created the snow layers with torn white CS and added Stickles Glitter Glue to the torn edges to give the look of glistening snow.

36 Already?

I can hardly believe it is already the 36th round of the Unidentified Image card swap that my friend Barb started. WOW! That's about 6 years of swapping, since we swap every other month. Each round the hostess chooses the image we will use, sending it to them with the previous rounds cards. Sue hosted this round. She chose this amazing image - Penny Black Botanical Notes. Thanks for hosting, Sue!

I added sparkle to the butterfly and to the center of the flower,
using Stickles Glitter Glue but unfortunately it doesn't show in the photo.

Sue also sent a Rubber Stampede sentiment, but somehow I failed to get a picture of the inside of my cards before I mailed them and that's where the sentiment is. I'm sorry I can't show it to you.

Life Is Good

The International Art & Soul "Use What You Have" Challenge starts today. Well how easy that one will be! Especially since many of us have way more stuff than we use. LOL!

Oh, wait. Maybe that's just me.

Anyway, I pulled out a fun stamp/die set that I've had for a while and created my card. Of course I also already had all the papers and the little butterfly brad.

WOW! That's an Eyelet Outlet brad, too. I've owned it for a while - before I was invited to be on their design team. But if you like it and want some, I'm just saying... these darling butterfly brads are on sale at Eyelet Outlet ($1.29 for 12 of them).... check them out HERE. They have the fall colors of them, too... HERE.

So go shopping, have fun! Just don't try to use any "newly purchased" items on your entries in the International Art & SOUL "Use What You Have" Challenge.

I hope you'll Use What You Have
and participate in the
